I am transferring student from my NJ community college. There I was very involved including Pres of the SGA/Programing board, member of the Student Conduct Board, and pretty much every club except those targeted at minorities (I'm white). My grades were good, 3.54, only that low because of this 1 class I don't want to talk about! I'm majoring in Poli Sci with the ambition of going to law school pursuing prosecution. I got into all 3 campuses, but I'm not even considering the Camden campus. Because Rutgers Newark accepted me first and I applied so late, I was worried that I didn't get into any others so I just bit the bullet and click accept for Newark. Here are the problems I have with Newark: I have been there 3 times for various reasons, today was my orientation and I took my tour, I really got a grasp of what I was in for. 1. Their student organ. is extremely lacking. They do have a couple good things, but it seems that an overwhelming amount are frats or minority centered groups. I don't want to get involved with frats. I know for a fact that NB has a ton of student groups because my friends are all members (i don't care about being with my friends). I want a wide variety of groups to join, not just limited to a few. 2. I intend to continue doing well at Rutgers and with the ambition of law school I want to get into honor societies and graduate with honors. However, when you look on the general website honor societies and graduating with honors specifically say *course type* ___ credits- New Brunswick Campus. When I asked my counselor about this when I made my classes, he said no we are just as good, I showed him the website, he claimed oh its just a mistake. I said they specifically what campus and its a mistake? 3. Apparently, the NB campus is more prestigious regarding how people, potential law schools, or employers view it in comparison over the other campuses. People have claimed on other message boards that Camden/Newark classes are even easier. If im going into massive debt to go to school, why not get the most of what I pay for? 4. When I went to my friends orientation at NB campus, they started off saying about how they were awesomely ranked nationally and world wide. This and that awards. During the the start of my Newark one, they have just one statement, that they are one of the nations most diverse campuses. I am not racist at all, I was one of the few white people there from what I could see, don't care; but I don't care how diverse the campus is-I want to hear about how good it is. 5. I have only been to Newark during the day, but from people who are against me going to Newark and want me to move to NB say the night will be very dangerous. They seem to have a massive police presence, much more than the equally dangerous NB campus. I honestly don't know, anyone know anything about Newark? I do get heckled at during my walk a couple times so far. I would be walking from the campus to Penn stat., seems very illuminated. Please don't try and tell me that Newark is the safest place on the planet, I know its not. To Counter: 1. Rutgers newark has much smaller class size, which is always beneficial 2. I can commute to it via mass transit with ease. 3. The campus is smaller and I can easily walk from building to building rather than use the shuttle service.... Read More »
